''Shampoo Island''

There is an island, off the coast of Myanmar/Burma, that is known as being magical. Near the city of Mawlamyine, this island has the usual Southeast Asian temples, murky waters, tropical flora.  That's not what makes this island so ''magical''. This island is magical because of its name & history. Shampoo Island is the name of it.  An island of suds, floating along a river, that smells like baby soap and vanilla and lavender and flowers all mixed together.
The actual history of the place is pretty wonderful. Shampoo Island is here:

It's in a river, just off the banks of Mawlamyine. In ancient times, the Royal family of Myanmar/Burma would visit Shampoo Island just once a year and get their hair washed in the river waters.   Then someone came with a bucket of shampoo  dotted with flower petals, and began massaging everything until it's a  thick lather.
I would love to visit this place one day because it seems so cool!.

Health Risks Associated with Shampoo

People use shampoo because they want clean, shiny nice smelling hair. All shampoo companies  promote that their shampoo does as the consumer wants. What most people do not realise, is that some chemicals in shampoo have a bigger risk of harm then good. These chemicals can cause serious risks in your health, such as memory loss, eye irritatiom, skin irritation, hair loss and even cancer.

These are the common ingredients which can cause risks in your health:
1.Fragrance- Fragrances in shampoo contain chemicals which can cause headaches and rashes. Sometimes these chemicals can make people cough and vomit, but this depends on the person.

2-Propylene glycol- this chemical can cause allergies.

3- Sodium lauryl sulfate - This chemical can cause athsma attacks. It also damages a persons hair follicels, which may lead to hair loss. This chemical is also known for eye irritation.

4- Diethanolamine- This chemical can cause liver and kidney cancer. This chemical can also be toxic to your brain.

If you're wondering why these chemicals can be used and sold in common hair shampoos, its because the authorities usually forget about the most popular shampoos which can be baught in the supermarket, and they only focus on the less popular shampoos.

To take it one more step further, shampoo manufacturers are, in a way, allowed to use different kinds of chemicals for their products. There are no regulations stopping them to use popular chemicals which can cause cancer when exposed regularly to a person's body.

How is Shampoo physically made?

First of all, a large batch of shampoo is made and then the batch is filled into the plastic bottles, which were made in another factory. The manufactoring proccess of shampoo can br broken down into three steps:

Compounding:

Compounding is the proccess of any large scale cosmetic production. All the indredients of Shampoo are mixed together in large steel tanks (about 3000 gallons) by workers. These workers are known as compounders. The raw materials, are poured into the batch tanks and thoroughly mixed. The order and temperatures are determined by a formulating chemist. Some ingredients like water or detergents are pumped and metered  into the batch tanks. A computer system is often used to control mixing speed and temperature. Depending on the size and type of shampoo, making a 3000 gallon batch can take any where from 1 to 4 hours.

Quality control check: After the shampoo has been approved by the Quality Control department, it is pumped into a holding tank, and will be stored untill the bottles are ready to be filled. From the holding tank, it gets pumped into a filler, which will then fill the shampoo bottles with the shampoo.

Filling: The filling line is  a long conveyor belt. At the start of the filling line, empty bottles are put into a hopper. The bottles are placed upright by a machine. They move along the conveyor belt to the filling carousel which holds the shampoo.
The filling carousel is made up of a series of filling heads that are designed to deliver  the correct amount of shampoo into the bottles. As the bottles move through this section of the filling line, they are automatically filled with shampoo. Next the bottles are capped, which can be done by machine or by a worker, depending on
the factory. The labels are then put on, and put in boxes ready for shipping.
